Skin Care Maintenance

To combat the toxins we expose it to every day, assist in its natural functioning, and maintain it in good condition, it is important to stick to a good skin care routine.

1. Cleanse - Morning & Night
Cleansing twice a day is necessary to remove grime, excess oil, or make up. Prefer herbal soaps for cleaning.

2. Tone - Morning & Night, throughout the day if required.
Many people have yet to discover the amazing function of toners. They can help dry skin stay moisturised, or help oily skin stay balanced. After cleansing there is no need to dry the skin out with a towel - let it stay moist - this helps the toner penetrate deeper. Toners are especially helpful to balance the oil production, and help to soothe and heal.

For dry skin, toners are a must, as they can deeply hydrate, and assist to lock in moisture.

3. Moisturise - Morning & Night
Moisturising protects the skin from the exterior environment - wind, sun, cold, or dry conditions. For dry skin, intensive moisturisers are required to keep it supple and elastic. For oilier skin, only a light moisturiser is needed. There's no need to apply much cream to the face at night, unless you have very dry skin, or are performing a special treatment.

Weekly or Fortnightly Exfoliate

To assist the skin in its natural cycle of removing dead skin cells, an exfoliant or scrub should be used regularly - once or twice a week is sufficient.

Facial Mask Treatment
A facial mask will remove more toxins and impurities from your pores than a cleanser or exfoliant, and is an important step in regular skin maintenance - a mask treatment should be performed at least once a fortnight to achieve a refreshed complexion.

Gently remove the mask with warm water, and follow with your toner and moisturiser.

Body

As the skin on the body is often less delicate than the facial skin, it does not require as strict a routine - but it should not be forgotten either. A body scrub is preferable to using a loofah, as body scrub products contain essential oils that will cleanse and moisturise the skin, in addition to exfoliating it.

Body Mists - a quick and easy way of applying moisture to the skin. Great to use during summer, when your exposure to the sun may be increased, and your skin requires frequent hydration. Can be used in addition to lotions, butters or oils for extra nourishment.

Body Oils - the most intensive product to moisturise the skin. Oils are absorbed quickly and more deeply into the skin than lotions or butters, and provide more thorough hydration.

Recommendations for Skin Types

Knowing your skin inside out is important, especially when deciding which products to use. There are three main skin types; dry, normal and oily. Your skin type may change over the course of your life, especially when experiencing hormonal fluctuations (such as during puberty, or menopause), and may occur at weak or strong levels. In addition to your skin type, you may experience one or more skin conditions, such as dehydration, acne, combination skin, or sensitivity. Both your general skin type, and any specific skin conditions should be taken into account when choosing your products.

For Dry Skin Type
Use a gentle cleanser, and always use a hydrating toner before moisturising. Use a facial oil for extra nourishment. Exfoliate once or twice a week to ensure adequate removal of dead skin cells.

For Normal Skin Type
Stick to a good basic skin care routine, and you will have great skin! Cleanse, tone & moisturise twice daily. Use an exfoliant and mask once or twice a week to ensure thorough cleansing and nourishment.

For Oily Skin Type
Strictly adhere to a good skin care routine. Keeping the skin clean and free of bacteria, grime and oil is essential, but don't forget that there is a delicate balance to be maintained. Stick to natural cleansers and alcohol-free toners. Don't exfoliate too often. Use a very light moisturiser to protect your skin from the environment.

Tips for Skin Conditions

For Dehydration
Similar routines to the Dry Skin Type should be followed, using oils and balms for extra nourishment, and mists throughout the day to keep flakiness to a minimum. Examine your diet, lifestyle, and current product use.

For Sensitivity
Choose gentle, soothing products, aligned with your skin type. Try to avoid over-stimulating the skin - focus on achieving balance and calm.

For Combination
This is all about balance. Choose products that will calm any blemishes and excess oil production, and tighten pores, but still provide moisture for the skin. When applying facial cream, focus on your dry areas. A lighter moisturiser may be required for oily areas, or refrain from moisturising them at all.

For Acne
Key is to reduce the bacteria on the skin, without aggravating it. Exfoliating may make your skin feel clean, but if you experience lots of blemishes, using an exfoliant too often may spread infection. Focus on deep cleansing, using masks, and compression. Don't forget to cleanse, tone, and moisturise twice daily - neglecting any part of your skin care routine could result in an unwanted break out. Choose antibacterial products that are also soothing, to calm any inflammation.

Other common skin conditions or disorders include Couperose, Eczema, Psoriasis, Seborrheic Dermatitis, Rosecea etc. Raen recommends visiting your doctor or a skin specialist if you have any skin disorder concerns.
